Passionate Hookers
We are calling for submissions for a small mook for all the crochet freaks out there. The mook will be aimed at those who are into crochet aged 18 to 35 years (so you'll be able to give one to the hooker in your life!), but with an appeal far broader. The mook will be a 'good fun' read for anybody, so submissions must not be targeted at a highly specialised audience.
Submissions are NOW CLOSED.
Submission guidelines
ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST BE:
- original, unpublished work
- of a reasonable length (see fiction, non-fiction and features below for specifics). Patterns must not run to ten pages, because they simply won't be accepted.
- emailed to info[AT]brascoebooks[DOT]com[DOT]au as an attachment. Please do NOT sent Word Vista files (use rich text *.rtf files instead).
- please note: any work sent to us in the body of an email will be deleted.
- length: 1,000 to 5,000 words
- crochet-related, if not entirely focused on crochet (e.g. if it's a murder story, hookers must be involved somehow; if it's non-fiction, you could write about your life with crochet - you get the idea)
- if you have an idea for an interview-based feature, please get in touch with us to see if it's something that we might publish. This will save you hassles if you do it and we don't like it (or think it doesn't fit).
- unique, innovative, or feature unusual techniques (or combinations of the above). This means that if you're submitting an amigurumi pattern, it must be for an unusual creature. The usual sort of animals and monsters (rabbits, cats, owls, snakes, worms, ladybirds, frogs, chthulu) are covered everywhere else, in plenty. We're after something that will make people sit up and take notice
- funky, unusual, suitable for a young and happening audience. We don't particularly want doilies or afghans unless they're spectacular. A corset made of tapestry crochet (or an awesome bag, or whatever), for instance, would make us jump for joy!
- written out properly: hook sizes must be provided in decimal measurement, yarn weights must be provided (in the form 'x ply') and the blend of yarn must be provided - please avoid brand names wherever possible.
- accompanied by high-quality photographs in full colour, at 300 dpi resolution. Where possible, we would like 'stitch detail' photographs as well as images of the entire project. If you are providing a tutorial, please accompany your tutorial with photographs that clearly illustrate each step.
- for tapestry crochet, accompanied by a pattern grid.
- humour and light-hearted material - quizzes and that sort of thing
- interesting features, such as why knitters and hookers would (often) fight to the death
- essays that ponder crochet, especially from a young person's perspective. Such as, if you are a hooker, why is it that everyone still thinks 'doilies'? Or, the difficulty of finding brilliant patterns. Or even as far as talking politics in hookers' terms... there's heaps of scope.
